JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Communications/Media Interns
SELC offers several communications internships throughout the year. During the academic school year, there is a part-time, unpaid internship available in each of our Charlottesville and Chapel Hill offices. These are most often filled by students at nearby UVa and Triangle area universities. Summer internships in the Charlottesville office may be full- or part-time, paid or unpaid, depending on applicants' experience, SELC needs, and a variety of other factors. Please note that the Chapel HIll office welcomes applications from those interested in longer-term internships extending into the academic year, but is not currently seeking summer-only communications interns.
Interns work directly with one of SELC's two Communications Manager on a variety of projects to help publicize our conservation work and build the infrastructure for the organization's media relations and public education efforts. Interns gain a fundamental understanding of the news media and basic communications strategies, as well as first-hand understanding of how non-profit organizations function.
Intern Duties
Depending on the needs of the Communications Managers, interns may perform a variety of tasks, including drafting fact sheets, press releases and web text, conducting Web-based research, creating and designing graphic elements such as Power Point presentations, and tracking newspaper and broadcast coverage of environmental issues in the South.
Qualifications
Interns should demonstrate close attention to detail, creative problem-solving, ability to follow instructions and also work independently, excellent writing skills and confident phone communications. Should be proficient at Micrsoft Word. Experience with Power Point, PhotoShop and a page layout program such as Quark is helpful. Preference is given to candidates with some level of demonstrated interest in environmental issues.
Application
Summer internships in the Charlottesville office generally run for 8 to 10 weeks between June 1 to August 31. Hours and dates are flexible. Deadline for inquiries is March 1.
School-year internships vary.
