Defending Our Southern Coast From Offshore Drilling

SELC is leading legal efforts to end industry control of offshore drilling and ensure that nothing like the disaster in the Gulf ever happens again.

Government agency rubber-stamping of drilling permits led directly to the BP spill.  Against this backdrop of recklessly lax oversight, and simultaneous pressure to open virtually the entire coastline of the Southeast to potentially harmful new drilling activity, SELC is engaged in a multi-front defense of lawsuits, Congressional legislation, and interaction with federal agencies.

Our priorities are:

  1. End lax oversight of offshore drilling through strict environmental review and safeguards;
  2. Hold BP accountable for the devastation to marine life and coastal ecosystems;
  3. Prevent any new drilling in the South Atlantic and Eastern Gulf;
  4. Accelerate a shift to a clean energy future.

Now is the time to act.

How and where the U.S. moves forward with offshore drilling will be decided over the next several months in Congress, the Obama Administration, and the courts. Drawing on our nearly 25 years of experience defending the southern coast, SELC asks you to join forces with us. We simply cannot risk the devastation that drilling could bring to our region’s world-class beaches, estuaries, and wetlands; nor can we put at risk our coastal communities with their thriving tourism and seafood industries. Please give today and help ensure a healthy and beautiful coast for decades to come.
