THE THREAT
Massive cement plant would destroy 1,000 acres of wetlands, destroy habitat, further pollute the river with levels of mercury harmful to people and wildlife
“Listen to Your Doctors” admonishes a billboard informing drivers that 200 Wilmington, North Carolina doctors are opposed to a massive proposed cement plant. The fourth-largest facility of its kind in the U.S., the Titan America plant would pose a serious human health risk by emit¬ting pollutants such as benzene, lead, and hydrochloric acid, and further elevating toxic mercury levels in the Northeast Cape Fear River. It would also destroy a thousand acres of ecologically rich wetlands. SELC is chal¬lenging the Titan plant, which is simply the wrong project in the wrong place. Earlier this year, we won an important court decision that blocks the state’s attempt to fast-track approval of the project.
