Duke Energy expansion (NC)
On August 14, 2007 the state of North Carolina’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) issued a draft air permit for the proposed 800 megawatt expansion of Duke Energy Carolinas Cliffside Steam Station. If allowed, the expansion would increase soot, smog and the state’s contribution to global warming, and would harm our state’s air for generations to come.
Despite the intense public interest in Duke’s proposal, and despite a request from a coalition of environmental and public health groups to hold additional hearings, DAQ has scheduled only one public hearing, on September 18, 2007 in Forest City, near the Cliffside site. As the effects of mercury, smog, soot and global warming pollution from a new dirty coal unit at Cliffside would be felt far beyond the immediate plant location, all North Carolinians are encouraged to make themselves heard on this controversial proposal.
Attend the public hearing on September 18 or submit your comments in writing to the Division of Air Quality (address below).
