Globe Timber Sale
Globe Timber Sale (Background)
Old Growth in the Globe.
Encompassing towering chestnut oaks and other venerable trees, the rare old-growth stands in the path of the timber sale are part of a larger complex of ancient forest stretching between Big Ridge and upper China Creek in the Globe. Removing any part of this network would damage the rest of this rare ecosystem. Many species depend on mature native forests for habitat, including black bear and the rapidly disappearing cerulean warbler.
The Benefits of the National Scenic Area.
According to a study released by WildSouth, one of our partners challenging the Globe timber sale, the Grandfather National Scenic Area would be an economic boon to three western North Carolina counties. Conducted by researchers at Colorado State University, the study found that the scenic area would attract 1.5 million visitors, lead to the creation of 724 new jobs, and generate an additional $38.4 million in revenue.
