Gold mining: a threat to clean water in South Carolina?

Case Summary

A Canadian company is seeking approval from the Army Corps of Engineers to develop the largest gold mine east of the Mississippi River in Lancaster County, South Carolina. The operation raises a number of environmental concerns, including the use of a cyanide leaching process to extract the gold that has been linked to stream and groundwater contamination; a 600-acre facility for storing toxic tailings; and the destruction of 162 acres of wetlands and seven miles of streams. SELC will engage in the permitting process to ensure that the Corps fully examines and mitigates as necessary any adverse impacts to clean water and other natural resources.
