Groups to challenge Navy project near right whale nursery
added 12.17.09
The Southern Environmental Law Center along with other conservation groups sent notice of our intent to challenge in court the U.S. Navy’s decision to build its $100 million Undersea Warfare Training Range next to the only known calving ground for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale off the coast of Florida and Georgia. The segmentation of the project—constructing first before considering the impacts of operating it--and its introduction of multiple known threats--ship strikes, entanglement, and noise disturbances--into an area critical to right whale mothers and calves are at issue.Navy Decision Dodges Protections for Endangered Right Whales
added 8.3.09
A U.S. Navy decision to proceed with construction of its Undersea Warfare Training Range without first obtaining the required approvals for the whole project located near the only known calving grounds for endangered right whales attempts an end run around environmental protections, according to public interest groups. More information is in a joint press release by Defenders of Wildlife, Earthjustice, The Humane Society of the United States, Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Southern Environmental Law Center.

Recently released plans by the U.S. Navy to use a marine area comprised of a protected area for snapper-grouper and adjacent to the only known calving ground for endangered North Atlantic right whales as an undersea warfare training range fail to adequately consider harmful environmental impacts. More details are in the press release, along with links for background documents, photos and video.
