Changing the Energy Paradigm
SELC is engaged in a sustained effort to change the energy paradigm of our heavily coal-dependent region. We are going before state regulatory agencies and to the courts to stop construction of a new fleet of conventional coal plants that will pump out millions of tons of CO2 each year. By requiring old coal-burning plants to adhere to modern pollution standards, we will speed up retirement of plants that should have been phased out decades ago. As southern utilities plan to meet spiraling electricity demand, SELC is going before state legislatures, utility commissions, and Congress to promote policies that will reduce demand by improving energy efficiency, and that place a priority on carbon-free renewable technologies to meet the electricity needs that remain.
