Coastal Development & Growth

SELC provides a powerful counterweight to the pressures that threaten precious coastal resources―including unchecked growth, the sell-off of timberlands to developers, and lax enforcement of environmental safeguards. In recent years, these pressures have brought the Southeast’s unspoiled coastal areas to a tipping point; without effective action, they could be lost within a decade. As part of a comprehensive coastal conservation initiative, SELC is steering new development away from sensitive ecological zones, such as the small “marsh hammocks” that dot Georgia’s salt marsh. We are also challenging unnecessary road projects that would usher in haphazard growth, and we are ensuring full enforcement of laws and regulations designed to protect coastal environments.
