Upholding Federal Safeguards

SELC has come to the defense of waters and wetlands left vulnerable by the U.S. Supreme Court. Rulings handed down in recent years have created confusion over the scope of the Clean Water Act and have left it to the Army Corps of Engineers to determine, case by case, which resources are protected. As a result, thousands of miles of streams and as many as 2 millions acres of wetlands could be open to destruction in the Southeast. SELC is using legal action to safeguard wetlands imperiled by Corps decisions. We are also championing passage of the Clean Water Restoration Act—legislation making clear that Congress intended to protect all the waters of the United States when it passed the Clean Water Act.
