Coastal Wildlife Protection

To combat threats to our remarkable array of coastal wildlife, SELC draws on all its skills. For example, it took a combination of legal action and political strategy to halt a Navy landing field that jeopardized a globally important refuge for migratory waterfowl. Now we are using our advocacy capabilities to compel the Navy to rethink plans for a sonar range that threatens the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Likewise, we have applied our legal muscle to protect nesting shorebirds and sea turtles from unrestrained beach driving on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. We also have worked in the courts and with state lawmakers to secure tougher protections for shellfish waters imperiled by polluted runoff.
