Logging in National Forests

SELC is challenging timber projects that threaten the natural riches of Southern Appalachian national forests―the crown jewels of the Southeast’s ecological and scenic treasures. Under intense pressure to increase timber harvests, the U.S. Forest Service has rolled out logging proposals that imperil thousands of acres of mature forest in our region. Through legal action and formal appeals, SELC and its partners are holding off or scaling back the worst of these timber sales. At risk are resources such as high-quality trout waters; rare stands of old-growth forest; intact habitat for black bear and other wildlife; and places beloved by hikers, anglers, birders, and others who enjoy backcountry experiences.
