Destructive Highways & Sprawl
Unnecessary highways helped make us the fastest-sprawling region in America. SELC is putting on the brakes to stop highway proposals that would increase pollution and global warming emissions and fuel further loss of open lands. Often touted as solutions to traffic congestion, new and bigger roads bring only temporary relief at best. Over time they pave the way to new development, which creates even more traffic. As SELC fends off destructive highway proposals, it promotes efficient alternatives, such as increased investment in public transit and upgrades to rail lines to move more freight by train rather than trucks. We also encourage communities to improve their street networks to route local drivers away from interstates and other arterial roads, freeing them up for through traffic.
