Preserving Community Character
By promoting sensible growth and efficient transportation, SELC fosters vibrant and livable communities. We also help special places to retain their distinctive character and to serve as models that can be applied elsewhere. For example, SELC is helping the Charlottesville area preserve the historic quality of its lively downtown and to steer development where it can best be supported. In the Charleston and Asheville areas, we are advocating transportation and redevelopment plans that would create walkable neighborhoods and commercial districts. And in the mountains of North Carolina, we are helping a county acquire the legal and regulatory tools to curb run-away growth and to protect the scenic views and natural areas vital to its tourism-based economy.
