TRANSPORTATION POLICY REFORM

SELC is the South’s leading voice for efficient transportation and smarter land use practices. Our goal is to reform asphalt-centered transportation policies that contribute to every serious environmental problem in our region, including air and water pollution, global warming, and loss of rural lands. For decades, our states have focused most of their transportation resources on building more and bigger highways—costly and often unnecessary projects that fuel motor vehicle-dependent sprawl, feed our addiction to oil, and increase the miles we drive. SELC advocates a fundamental overhaul of transportation policy in the South that will reduce our reliance on driving, promote sensible growth, support maintenance of existing roads and bridges, and increase investment in efficient transportation options such as public transit and rail.
