POLLUTED RUNOFF
SELC is securing tougher controls on polluted runoff, our single greatest threat to water quality. In our rapidly growing region, stormwater picks up mud and debris from construction sites and oil and other chemicals from paved surfaces and washes these contaminants into rivers and streams. The rush of water itself can damage sensitive ecosystems and scour habitat vital to aquatic wildlife. Too often, polluted runoff is controlled by a hodge-podge of sometimes conflicting local, state, and federal laws and regulations. SELC is helping communities and partner groups sort through this confusion to ensure full enforcement of water safeguards. We are also shaping and strengthening regulatory controls to provide better protection for both inland and coastal waters.
