MAINTAINING NATURAL FLOW

SELC defends natural river and stream flows vital to clean water and healthy aquatic ecosystems. The South’s persistent drought has drawn a spotlight on this issue and on our region’s failure to steward water resources carefully. Throughout our six states, SELC is working with legislatures and natural resource agencies to create comprehensive water plans and regulatory frameworks that embrace long-term conservation and that keep rivers and streams flowing at natural levels. At the same time, we are combating overreliance on engineered fixes to water-supply problems, such as dams, reservoirs, and massive transfers between river basins. In addition to disrupting natural seasonal flows in our waterways, these projects can fuel unsustainable development and wasteful practices.
