Promoting Sensible Growth and Better Transportation Choices

The South is witnessing unprecedented population growth, and as a result, development and transportation trends are transforming our landscapes and changing the way we live. The economic, environmental, and health impacts of much of our region's growth threaten to overwhelm the very qualities that make the South such an attractive place to live, work, and visit. SELC knows there are abundant opportunities to develop better ways to grow - both at the state and local level.

Our Land and Community Project applies a combination of public education, policy reform, and legal advocacy to promote attractive, prosperous communities and push for more effective, sustainable transportation choices. SELC is helping Southern communities capture the benefits of economic growth without minimizing the costs of poorly planned development. Our efforts include revitalizing existing communities, developing a less destructive transportation system that provides meaningful alternatives to having to drive everywhere, and protecting this region's rural landscapes and open spaces.
