As a development officer for SELC, I’ve discovered what is so special about the Carolinas: I’ve kayaked around Sandy Island in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, hiked the North Shore Trail along Fontana Lake in western North Carolina. I’ve witnessed tens of thousands tundra swan and snow geese hearken the start of a new day at Lake Mattamuskeet on the Albemarle-Pamlico Sound in NC, and camped on Yellow Mountain in the Roan Highlands, looking over into Tennessee. I’ve gotten lost in the windy roads of Caesar’s Head State Park, slogged through Congaree Swamp National Park, and regularly hike the Eno River State Park in my own back yard in Hillsborough, NC.
At each site, the people always welcome my friends and me. They showed off a wonderful sparkle in their eyes and broad grins when we acknowledge how lucky they are to live so close to the birds, in the mountains, or on our coast. I care because I couldn’t imagine a South without all of these unique places, could you?
