About Memphis Community Against Pollution

Memphis Community Against the Pipeline, MCAP, is a Black-led grassroots movement in Memphis, Tennessee that fought and beat Valero Energy Corporation and Plains All American’s Byhalia Connection Pipeline, a proposed crude oil pipeline that would have cut through Southwest Memphis communities already burdened by decades of environmental injustice.

Also known as the Sparta Aquifer outside of Tennessee, the deep sand aquifer is the Memphis area’s most precious natural resource. We work to maintain its superior quality and quantity to keep our region thriving for the benefit of present and future generations.
