Director’s letter: ‘The new normal’

Executive Director Jeff Gleason reflects on SELC’s historic achievements reached this year

Executive Director Jeff Gleason

Welcome to the new normal.

That’s how SELC Executive Director Jeff Gleason starts his annual letter to our generous supporters.

“Although 2020 will forever be known as the year of the coronavirus, it will also be known at SELC as a year of remarkable achievements,” he writes.

Our legal victories forced the cancellation of the egregious Atlantic Coast Pipeline. In a coal ash settlement with Duke Energy, attorneys compelled the largest cleanup of the toxic sludge in history.

Although these are two historic victories, they are just two of the many ways SELC has made its mark on this year.

When reflecting on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline victory in a recent story on our website, administrative and legal assistant Katie Storer said, “It really showed me that if you want to achieve something that seems impossible, just take the first step. Then the next.”

Writes Gleason, “So many of the uphill but ultimately successful efforts we have launched over the years have come down to just taking the first step. Taking that first step would not have been possible without the generous support of SELC’s loyal and committed friends.”
