Pellet Mills: A Threat to NC Forests

SELC is closely examining the impacts of the pellet industry—growing to meet European power plants’ demands—on eastern North Carolina forests and wetlands. We have already uncovered evidence that some pellet mills are using whole hardwood trees, from slow-growing wetland forests, and not just wood waste such as sawdust or logging residue, as the industry advertises. If the use of whole trees is common practice, pellet production could loom large as a threat to our region’s forests.
