The Great Invisible: What can we learn from the Gulf’s BP oil spill?

Nearly five years after the disastrous BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a new proposal is on the table to open up the Southeast coast to offshore drilling – a move that would jeopardize the communities, jobs, and beloved beaches that are the very heart of our coastal states.

In just two days, SELC and partners will host a South Atlantic Offshore Drilling Forum in Chapel Hill. The event, free to the public, will bring together scientific experts to discuss the potential impact of offshore drilling on the Atlantic coast during an afternoon session.

In the evening session, we'll showcase the stories of individuals and communities who have lived with drilling and its impacts on their coasts. This will include clips from The Great Invisible, a documentary of filmmaker Margaret Brown traveling to towns throughout the South that are still experiencing the disastrous effects off the Deepwater Horizon oil spill from 2010, even though the headlines have gone away. Margaret Brown will join U.S. Congressman David Price (NC-4), Susan Forsyth of the Surfrider Foundation, and Cynthia Sarthou of the Gulf Restoration Network to explore the lessons and legacy of the BP spill – and what's at stake for the Southeast.
