Biden administration announces permanent ban on offshore drilling off Atlantic, Pacific coasts

WASHINGTON — Today, building on a 10-year moratorium on Atlantic offshore drilling put in place by the first Trump administration, the Biden administration permanently protected this area from offshore oil and gas development. The move comes after a groundswell of opposition from communities along the Atlantic coast over the past ten years.

In response, Megan Huynh, SELC Wetlands and Coasts Program Leader, released the following statement:

“There has been almost unified opposition to offshore drilling off the Atlantic coast since it was first proposed. The decision will mean preservation of our coast’s communities, economies, and the coastal places we hold dear.”

Over 250 coastal municipalities passed resolutions to oppose offshore drilling after the area was first proposed for leasing a decade ago. Presidents Obama, Trump, and Biden, along with Republican and Democratic Governors, all took actions to protect the Atlantic coast from drilling.
