Press Statement: Alabama Power’s Request for Renewable Energy

Montgomery, AL—Today the Alabama Public Service Commission heard testimony from Alabama Power Company on the utility’s request for approval on 500 MW of renewable energy capacity. 

The Southern Environmental Law Center intervened on behalf of Alabama Environmental Council in the proceeding, participating with a variety of groups in asking about the utility’s plans to pursue a significant investment in renewable energy.

Although Alabama Power did not provide specific details on how the capacity will be allocated or whether certain types of renewable energy projects would be eligible, previous statements from the utility and today’s testimony indicate it will be used to develop solar projects driven by customer demand in the public and private sectors.  These projects are capped at 80 MW each and the total amount of renewables requested is 500 MW.  

“We appreciate the chance to participate in these hearings, and would like to continue the conversation about how Alabama can approach smart investments in clean energy,” said Michael Churchman, Executive Director with Alabama Environmental Council. “While many questions remain about the details of the proposal, it is clear that utilities are acknowledging the energy shift already underway and the cost-savings and benefits that come with renewables like solar and wind.”

“As evidenced by Google’s decision to expand into northern Alabama’s TVA territory, we are witnessing an increasing demand for clean energy options from business leaders,” said Keith Johnston from the Southern Environmental Law Center. “Our hope is that Alabama Power will take this opportunity and make renewable generation a more widely used and available resource, while also making sure those energy decisions benefit customers across the state.”
