Mike Mather

Senior Communications Manager

Former Hampton Roads reporter at WTKR and The Virginian-Pilot

Private pilot, commercial drone pilot, 2d Lt., Civil Air Patrol

 B.A., Radford University

 With SELC since 2016

Years of journalism experience reporting in Virginia’s most populous region prepared Mike well when he turned his attention to getting the word out the crucial environmental issues SELC tackles regularly. Born in Virginia Beach, he returned to work in his hometown after college and had a career that included national bylines in addition to his ones in The Virginian-Pilot. Mike moved from the newspaper to television where he reported for WTKR, mostly as an investigative journalist. A highlight was tracking down a fugitive all the way to Russia.

At SELC, Mike manages communications the Charleston office, as well as for several regional issues, like offshore drilling. One of the highlights of his time at SELC has been witnessing the shift among governors in the Southeast from nearly unanimous support for offshore drilling in the Atlantic to now unanimous opposition.

A longtime musician, Mike easily picked his favorite place in SELC’s region — Nashville. When he’s not chasing great tunes or using his pilot’s license, Mike can be found spending winters teaching with the adaptive ski program at Wintergreen and summers with his family in the Outer Banks.

The key to SELC’s success is our people. Consider joining our team to defend this region’s air, water, and natural treasures.
