SELC statement on Dominion Energy’s offshore wind filing

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Today Dominion Energy filed an application with Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) to construct a 2.6 gigawatt offshore wind project off the coast of Virginia. In response to the announcement, SELC Senior Attorney Will Cleveland released the following statement:

“The push for a carbon-free power grid is long overdue, and we cannot get there without harnessing the power of wind. The passage in 2020 of the transformative Virginia Clean Economy Act jumpstarted the Commonwealth’s transition to a zero-carbon grid, and with some of the best offshore wind sites in the country, Virginia has another opportunity to lead the South in developing reliable clean energy projects like this one.

“In all of its proposals, Dominion must prove its plans are cost-effective in terms of both energy generation and environmental protection. It is vital that we safeguard the Commonwealth’s ratepayers and its resources, including the wetlands and wildlife that make Virginia’s coasts so special. Offshore wind is projected to become an even more affordable source of power in coming years, and we look forward to reviewing the filing to make sure that Dominion delivers for Virginia.”
