Statement from SELC on Virginia Lawmakers Passing Affordable Energy Act

RICHMOND, VA — Virginia lawmakers acted in the best interest of the state’s residents this week, approving the Affordable Energy Act. The new law removes restrictions preventing the State Corporation Commission (SCC) from lowering electric utility rates when the agency determines customers will be overcharged.

The move restoring the SCCs’ regulatory abilities means Virginians could pay less for energy.

Following the bill’s passage, SELC Senior Attorney Will Cleveland released the following statement:

“This is a major victory for Virginians. For the first time in a generation, the Commission will have the power to make sure all customers pay a fair price for electricity. This is essential as we continue Virginia’s clean energy transition and ensure that inflated prices are not passed on to Virginians who can afford them the least.”
