Working for SELC

A Career at SELC: Engaging, Rewarding, Vitally Important.

When you join the Southern Environmental Law Center, you take on a mission: to use the power of the law to protect the natural resources and special places of the Southeast. You become part of a multi-faceted team that is fiercely determined to get the job done, recognizing that the stakes are huge for our region and its people.  At the same time, you become part of a community that enjoys each other’s company and draws strength from the respect, friendships, and common purpose shared among our staff and board.

Although SELC is a nonprofit, we operate like a good business. With stable leadership and a secure financial footing made possible by loyal and generous funders, SELC maintains high professional standards and provides the sophisticated tools, technology, and administrative support necessary to ensure the success of our law, policy, and program communications work.

To better serve all communities that are facing environmental threats in the states where we work, SELC seeks to reflect greater racial and cultural diversity and embed equity and inclusiveness throughout our organization and the work we do. We believe that a broad range of ideas, life experiences, and backgrounds enriches our workplace, drives innovative thinking, and attracts highly talented people who seek a work environment that values the unique contributions of individual team members. Our goal is to create and maintain a staff and a board that, at every level, reflects the rich racial and cultural diversity of the communities where we work and the clients that we serve. SELC is dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of environmental lawyers and leaders.  We are always looking toward the future, and our summer internships and Associates Program offer broad-based training and a gateway for young attorneys who want to dedicate their careers to environmental law.

We also recognize that our mission requires more than legal expertise. At SELC, accomplished fundraisers, graphic designers, communications managers, writers, digital strategists, administrative staff, and more must collaborate with attorneys across our regional offices to get the job done.

Whether you are just starting out or well into your career, consider making SELC your professional home. You will have the satisfaction of knowing, day in and day out, that you are making a meaningful and lasting impact.

We believe that our effectiveness as an organization depends on individuals coming together to collaborate as a team. SELC is at its best when all of our staff and board contribute their unique selves to our work. We will ensure our workplace always welcomes, includes, and supports every member of the SELC family, and we will hold each other accountable to this commitment.

I really love SELC’s place-based approach—this is our ground, and we’re fighting for it. We live here and work here, and we really care about this community.
