Director of IT Operations

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is hiring a Director of IT Operations to join and help lead SELC’s growing IT department. This person will manage our IT Support team, collaborate with our Deputy Director and fractional CIO on strategic initiatives, oversee availability of systems/infrastructure, and keep abreast of new tech that could advance how we work to protect the places and empower the people of the South.

It is exciting to join SELC and our IT team. We’ve completed several technology modernization projects over the past few years and will now add new IT staff members to increase team capacity while we continue our technology modernization work. This new IT Operations Director will be a key player in moving us from legacy tech to new systems and help lead formalization of new IT support processes.   

SELC currently has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work at home up to two days a week. This is a full-time, exempt position and employees must reside in our region. This role can be based in our Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; or Atlanta, GA offices. SELC will provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position.       

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise IT Operations team, responsible for operational support of IT systems, infrastructure, and applications across our six-state organization.
  • Work closely with the CIO to develop and execute a comprehensive IT strategy and roadmap aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Develop and manage the IT budget, ensuring cost effectiveness and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Establish and enforce IT policies, procedures, and standards.  
  • Provide oversight and ensure availability of IT systems and infrastructure, including a predominantly Microsoft technology landscape, including Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure, and network equipment utilizing Cisco Meraki and Fortinet.
  • Keep abreast of technology and cybersecurity trends and standards, and work with CIO to maintain state-of-the art systems and practices. 
  • In collaboration with the Enterprise Applications team, develop enterprise application technology standards, maintain an organizational application inventory, and build operationalization processes for support of SELC applications post-deployment. 
  • Ensure organizational support for hardware and software issues including end-user devices, IT infrastructure, enterprise applications, and other technology-related systems.  
  • Develop and manage IT support processes including the utilization of a centralized ticket management system to ensure issues are identified, tracked, and resolved.
  • Oversee telecommunication services, including phone systems, internet connectivity, and mobile communications.
  • Communicate IT initiatives, progress, and challenges to organizational leadership and staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and 12-15 years IT experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides IT support in a fast-paced, professional environment. 
  •  5+ years in an IT management role, including supervising a team of 4 or more staff.
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure, cloud services, cybersecurity, and project management.
  • Operational proficiencies in Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Exchange, Windows 10/11, Microsoft Office, and cloud-based applications. 
  • Experience with desktop configuration/deployment required. 
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to helping SELC create and foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. You engage in ongoing personal learning and are eager to contribute to our organizational efforts in this area.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure preferred. 
  • Experience with designing and implementing support processes, for a multi-state/site organization.  
  • A/V support experience preferred.
  • Commitment to or interest in environmental, climate, and environmental justice issues.

Compensation & Benefits:

SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer. 

SELC will provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position, up to a specific dollar amount and contingent on the move being at least 50 miles from the current primary address.
