Hurricane Sandy Destroys Sections of Highway 12

Hurricane Sandy followed Irene’s 2011 path of destruction, washing out sections of Highway 12 and cutting off access to Hatteras Island via the Bonner Bridge. SELC and other groups are calling for an alternative to the Bonner Bridge replacement project, as the ocean frequently reclaims its access road. Suggested alternatives include a ferry system, such as the one serving Ocracoke Island, or a longer bridge through the Pamlico Sound to the town of Rodanthe.
