No Justification for a New Route 460

Among the most wasteful and destructive road projects SELC is battling is a plan to build a new 55-mile, four-lane highway parallel to Route 460 in rural Southside Virginia between Petersburg and Suffolk.

Present and projected traffic levels on the existing Route 460 offer no justification for the highway, which VDOT has estimated could destroy up to a hundred acres of wetlands, chew through more than 3,000 acres of open space, and lead to development of up to 14,000 acres at the interchanges alone.
