Chris Bertrand
Associate Attorney
Before Chris entered environmental law, he experienced water quality up close. As a canoe instructor on the Chattahoochee River, and as the Satilla Riverkeeper in South Georgia, he witnessed firsthand the water pollution that SELC works to prevent.
Working in the Birmingham office, Chris assesses cases, strategizes with senior attorneys, interfaces with client groups, and attends public meetings. He also drafts memos, motions, briefs, and more. His legal expertise brings him full circle: “At SELC, I am able to work with our partner groups to help prevent illegal pollution and protect the beautiful places and people of the Southeast.”
The Okefenokee Swamp is Chris’ favorite place in the Southeast “because of its beautiful wildlife and excellent water trails,” he said. As a riverkeeper, “my office was in the Okefenokee Swamp, so I got to spend a lot of time with the alligators. I also really enjoy the Appalachian Trail. I’ve had the pleasure of hiking the Georgia section, and made forays to other sections within our region.”
