Our States

SELC is focused exclusively on the people and places of the South: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. We are experts on all things southern: our people, ecology, culture, communities, and how things work in this unique region.  With nine offices throughout these six states, the Southern Environmental Law Center is able to blend region-wide perspective and strategy with local presence and place-based action.  It’s a powerful combination.

The stakes are extremely high.  Southern Appalachian mountain forests, for instance, harbor greater diversity than any forest outside of the tropics.  Our region has more miles and more kinds of rivers than any other region, and we claim half of all wetlands remaining in continental U.S.  By enacting and enforcing environmental safeguards in the South, SELC is helping to ensure that we will pass a healthy and beautiful heritage on to our children and grandchildren—while also having a profound effect on environmental laws and policies that affect the entire nation.
